HISTORY
The CSIR at a Glance: 75 Years of Science for Society
Born out of the 1945 Scientific Research Council Act, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is South Africa’s oldest and largest public-sector science council. From its 100-hectare “Scientia” campus in Pretoria and regional hubs country-wide, the CSIR mobilises 2 143 staff (1 474 scientists and engineers) to translate cutting-edge research into industrial growth, a capable state and improved quality of life. Its mandate—under the Minister of Higher Education, Science & Innovation—is to innovate and localise technology while nurturing the national skills base and stewarding unique large-scale facilities such as wind tunnels, pilot plants and the national high-performance computing centre.
