Arresting the scourge of wildlife crime
Since forming a partnership in 2013, the CSIR and South Africa National Parks (SANParks) have worked together to enhance the effectiveness of personnel involved in counter-poaching efforts. The CSIR was tasked with supporting SANParks in developing a technology roadmap, identifying and establishing the required capabilities and evaluating, customising and implementing a range of technologies and training interventions – particularly in the hardest-hit areas of the Kruger National Park. A major breakthrough was the deployment of the Cmore integration and data echo software platform, which enabled the special operations team to integrate and digitise their extensive security capabilities.

Meet the Meerkat: Ace against poaching
Built on expertise in sensors and surveillance, data processing, secure communications and mobile platforms, the Meerkat continues to stop poachers in their tracks – literally. Named by our South African National Parks (SANParks) partners for its ability to “pop up” and survey the area, the CSIR developed the first radar and optical detection system in collaboration with Reutech Radar Systems, with support from SANParks and the Peace Parks Foundation. Integrated into the security infrastructure of the Kruger National Park, the system has achieved an impressive 98% detection success rate in operational areas, leading response teams to poachers before they strike. The latest version features advanced stared array technology, AI-driven target classification and enhanced mobility, enabling deployment across vast terrains, including peri-urban environments, to protect for sensitive asset.

Critical and essential infrastructure at risk g
The CSIR has supported the South African Police Service in formulating the Critical Infrastructure Protection Act, 2019 (Act 8 of 2019) in response to the growing threats of sabotage, crime and vandalism targeting infrastructure. CSIR defence and security experts contributed by developing supporting regulations, a risk categorisation model, a security reference architecture and by identifying the enabling capabilities and technologies needed to implement the regulations at critical points.
