Fires and Explosions Test Facility
The CSIR-managed fires and explosions testing, training and research and development facility at Kloppersbos helps achieve safe working conditions for South Africans in industries where fires and explosions may occur. The facility provides a full-scale surface testing facility for the evaluation of underground explosion suppression systems, the flammability of conveyor belts, dust suppression systems for continuous miners and similar investigations.
The unique location and size of the facility allows for the demonstration of large-scale coal dust/methane explosions, making it an ideal venue for basic and refresher training sessions for underground workers.
Fires and Explosion Research, Testing and Training Facility
The CSIR-managed fires and explosion testing and training facility at Kloppersbos is located approximately 40 km north of Pretoria. The size and location of the facility allows controlled large-scale coal dust/methane explosions as live demonstrations when training mine workers.
Its services include:
Mine fire and explosion safety awareness training seminars
Fire and explosion suppression/mitigation product testing and evaluation
Conveyor belt fire retardant property testing
Explosibility testing of coal dust and industrial dusts such as those in the pharmaceutical, food and chemicals sector
Evaluation of mine ventilation products and systems
