South Africa is one of the most developed countries in Africa, however, imperatives are still focussed on affordable food production, industry and job creation. A key opportunity lies in developing probiotics for the production of both commodity and speciality foods as consumers are demanding more naturally produced animal products. Unique locally sourced probiotics offers an alternate strategy to improve farm productivity by improving digestibility and feed conversion, achieving a higher growth rate, attenuation of disease and improving vigour. This synopsis describes the development and formulation of probiotics for use in the production of broiler chickens, dusky-cob, abalone, and ornamental koi.
