Tactical vehicle mobility

The CSIR performs independent research into vehicle mobility, including modelling of vehicle dynamics, tyre characterisation, terrain profile measurement and roll-over stability. Research is also conducted into controllable suspension and, increasingly, control of autonomous vehicles. The outcomes have to ensure a balance between safe and effective mobility solutions, and relative comfort and ease of handling.

Focus areas

  • Vehicle-terrain interaction (terra-mechanics): Off-road vehicle trafficability/negotiability performance prediction utilising both empirical and computational methods.
  • Vehicle system/sub-system characterisation and parameterisation with the development of scientific/empirical models. This also includes multibody dynamics modelling and simulation.
  • Autonomous ground vehicles (mobile systems).
  • Hybrid electric drive technology and electrical machines.
  • Updating of mobility standards and handbook.

 

Supported sectors include military, police, forestry, oil drilling, agriculture and mining.
